However a shortage of providers, both physicians and CRNA's, combined with cuts in reimbursement has resulted in rising salaries and increased costs for locum tenens coverage. The current environment has forced many anesthesia groups to request financial support from the hospital or reduce or limit OR coverage.

Hospitals are faced with tough decisions about subsidizing groups or not having enough providers. Many hospitals prefer not to open this "Pandora's Box", but recognize that losing surgical volumes is not an option.
